How Often Should You Wash Lyocell Sheets?
Share
Good sheets should be easy to live with. Eucalyptus lyocell is, as long as you know the few things it does not like. Here is how often to wash it, how to wash and dry it, and how to keep it getting softer.
How often to wash them
Once a week is a sensible default for most people. Sheets collect sweat, skin oils and whatever else comes to bed with you, and a weekly wash keeps them feeling fresh.
Wash more often if
- You sleep hot or have night sweats. Twice a week is not unreasonable during a warm spell or a difficult stretch.
- You share the bed with a pet.
- You have been unwell.
Pillowcases
Pillowcases sit against your face and hair all night, so many people change them more often than the rest of the bed. Every full set of The Sheets includes four, which makes swapping to a fresh one easy.
How to wash lyocell sheets
Eucalyptus lyocell does not need special treatment. It needs a gentle hand.
Do
- Machine wash cold, at 30 degrees
- Use a mild liquid detergent
- Give the load room to move
- Tumble dry low, or line dry
- Iron on a low setting if you like a crisp finish
Avoid
- Bleach
- Fabric softener
- High heat, in the wash or the dryer
- Dry cleaning
- Washing with zips, hooks or Velcro that can snag
Why skip fabric softener
Softener coats fibres. On lyocell that coating works against the fabric's ability to move moisture away from the skin, and it is not needed: the fibres are naturally smooth, and the fabric gets softer with every wash on its own.
Why cold and low
Heat is hard on any fine fabric. A cool wash and a low tumble dry protect the fibre and keep the sheets looking and feeling their best for longer.
What changes over time
The Sheets arrive with a soft sateen sheen. Wash by wash, they settle into a matt, brilliant white and grow softer each time. The cooling and moisture-wicking properties come from the fibre itself, not a treatment, so they stay with the sheets throughout. We go into this in why eucalyptus sheets get better with every wash.

Tumble dry on low, or line dry out of strong direct sun. Take the sheets out while they are still very slightly warm and fold or put them straight on the bed, and most creases will fall out on their own.
Between uses, keep the set somewhere cool and dry. Every full set comes with a eucalyptus lyocell storage bag, which keeps the pieces together and dust free in the cupboard.
Having two sets helps. If you wash often, a second set means the bed is never waiting on the dryer, and each set is washed half as often.
Common questions
How often should I wash lyocell sheets?
Once a week suits most people. Wash more often if you sleep hot, have night sweats, share the bed with a pet or have been unwell.
Can I tumble dry lyocell sheets?
Yes, on a low heat setting. Line drying works well too.
Can I use fabric softener on lyocell?
We recommend skipping it. It coats the fibres and works against how well they move moisture, and the fabric gets softer with every wash without it.
What temperature should I wash lyocell sheets at?
Machine wash cold, at 30 degrees.
Do lyocell sheets need ironing?
No. The fabric relaxes and softens without it. If you like a crisp finish, iron on a low setting.
