How the score is calculated

The Sleep Disruption Index blends two real, directly sourced measures into the score shown above. No estimated or third-party figures are used for either pillar.

What it measures
Hypnotic (sleep medication) items prescribed per 1,000 registered patients over the last 12 months, sourced directly from NHS prescribing data via OpenPrescribing, at Sub-ICB Location level.
Why it affects the score
A higher prescribing rate signals more people whose sleep is disrupted enough to seek medical support, the clearest available proxy for how widely sleep is being interrupted in an area.
How it can be improved
A consistent wind-down routine and bedding that supports rather than fights a falling body temperature help the body settle into sleep without needing to force it.
Average night-time temperature 34%
What it measures
Average night-time low temperature, sourced from Met Office UK Climate Averages (1991 to 2020 normal), at town or nearest weather station level.
Why it affects the score
Core body temperature needs to drop by roughly one degree for deep sleep to begin, a shift that's harder to achieve when the room, and the night outside it, is already warm.
How it can be improved
Lighter tog bedding, natural fibres over synthetic blends, and keeping the bedroom a few degrees cooler than feels obvious.
Search interest for sleep disruption National context, not scored
What it measures
People tend to search in the middle of the night, once sleep has already broken, not before, which makes search volume a real-time signal worth having. Google Trends doesn't publish this below the level of the UK's four nations, so it can't be scored per town or region here. What it can do honestly is show where England sits nationally.

England's figure above is the average of five sleep-disruption search terms (can't sleep, insomnia, trouble sleeping, waking up at night, how to fall asleep) relative to the other UK nations, and it's the same single number for every town and region on this page, since Google Trends has nothing finer than nation-level for the UK. Adding a constant to every result wouldn't change a single ranking, so it's shown here as background rather than folded into the composite. England actually comes third of the four nations on this average, not first, source: Google Trends, last 12 months.

About The Sheets

The Sheets is Mossva's hero set, made from eucalyptus lyocell, a fibre that's naturally breathable and moisture wicking, so heat and damp move away from the body rather than sitting against the skin through the night. The set is OEKO-TEX certified and FSC sourced, and comes in Double, King, and Super King.

Method. Town and city figures use the local authority a postcode falls within, matched against a curated list of around 28 larger English towns and cities; anywhere else falls back to its wider England region (a population-weighted average of the towns within it). The Sleep Disruption Index blends two measures: sleep medication (hypnotics, BNF 4.1.1) prescribing per 1,000 registered patients, and average night-time low temperature. The menopause lens swaps the first measure for HRT (BNF 6.4.1) prescribing per 1,000 women aged 45 to 59, keeping the same temperature pillar and the same 66/34 weighting.

Why 66/34. The original build weighted treatment, search interest, and temperature at 47/29/24. With search interest currently unavailable at the required granularity, those two remaining weights are rescaled to sum to 100%, preserving their original ratio to one another (47:24 becomes 66:34). Search interest is still shown further up the page, as a single national comparison across the four UK nations, since that's genuinely all the granularity Google Trends offers for the UK, it just can't move a per-town score, since it's identical for every English result.

What the prescribing components measure, and don't. Both prescribing figures reflect how often a medication is prescribed in an area relative to population, not a direct measure of symptom severity. Prescribing rates are shaped by GP practice habits, appointment availability, and local awareness alongside underlying need, so a lower rate in a given area shouldn't be read as "less disrupted sleep" without that caveat; it may equally reflect under-treatment.

Where figures are estimated rather than directly sourced. Both prescribing pillars are directly sourced for every one of the 28 towns, with no estimation. Temperature is directly sourced for 12 of the 28; the rest use the nearest comparable weather station within the same county or coastal setting, flagged individually in the page's source code.
